Should the British monarchy be abolished?
The British monarchy is an institution that enjoys widespread support across Britain. This is an institution that is exclusive, and therefore, by virtue of its very existence, promotes inequality and the class system. In this article I will offer my reason for supporting the abolishment of the British monarchy.
An Undemocratic Family
Unfortunately, Britain is half a democracy. Our Parliament consists of two houses; a lower house, the House of Commons, which is fully elected, and the House of Lords, which is not elected. For laws to be approved, they must go through the upper chamber and be scrutinised by the Lords, following each law being drafted and debated in the Commons.
If a law makes it through the undemocratic Lords, it then goes for royal approval, which is called Queen’s consent. The problem with this is that one person in the whole country gets to ultimately decide whether a law is approved or not. This is not democratic in the slightest.
There may be people who claim the Queen is above politics but the hard truth is that she is not. Someone who is constitutionally part of MPs oath of fealty whenever a new parliament is in session cannot be above politics. Essentially, the Queen decides if something becomes law or not. However, this is usually a formality, but there are exceptions.
